Kazantzakis is simply great, and this is not a comment about the work, but about the kindle format. As I was scrolling through, I noticed that the biography of Kazantzakis at the end of the book stops abruptly. I have no way of knowing how much is missing.This makes me wonder how much of the text itself might be missing, too. Haven't started reading yet, so I don't know myself. However, buyer beware: some might be.
Many are called "saint". Saint Francis TRULY is one of the first order. He practiced miracles and devoted his life to loving God. He eschewed the frailties of human existence in his aspiration toward a Christ-like life.I am a serious fan of Nikos Kazantzakis. Many will not like this book. It is seriously over the top. But Francis was not a common man, nor, I suspect, a believable character in his own time. This book is not up to the standard of "The Last Temptation of Christ". However, as in that book, Kazantzakis shows himself to be a master at rendering the ancients in full (often bloody) 3-dimensional color. The centuries have not been kind to Saint Francis -- turning him into a cardboard silhouette. Kazantzakis breathes life into him and thereby restores him to his rightful place as an icon of faith who glorified God with every painful step along the path of life. There is much to admire and much to be learned from this man of God.
This book is an inspirational classic. I was sad when it went out of print and extremely grateful to find copies available at Amazon. I don't know if folks might have been concerned about reading this book due to the author's very controversial "last Temptation of Christ". I would say that all that he might have done "wrong" in "Last Temptation" he did right in this one ! He really got the "spirit" of St. Francis' life and struggle. I can't imagine anyone reading this without getting tears as well as a lot of deep reflection. Beautifully written, and incredibly inspiring. I would sure like to see this come back into print.
Kazantzakis' Saint Francis is a remarkable, memorable book. The writing is lyric, intense, and inspiring. Anyone--Catholic, Orthodox,of any faith--will benefit from this biography. But, as stated above, this work goes far, far beyond mere biography. Francis' transformation, from local, would-be troubador to tireless Apostle, is unforgettable.The book was delivered promptly, and in excellent (new) condition. The author makes St Francis come to life in a most believable way.
I got this book because Dr. Wayne Dryer raved about in in his recent book and DVD, expecting the Miracalous. I paid over $80 for the book, which is very high, but, I thought, I am sure it is worth it after seeing Dr. Dryer promote it. The more I read, the more confuse I get.. I am halfway through the book. I have no doubt that St. Francis was a holy man, full of passion, focus and attempting to do God's will. . But the more I read, the more I thought St. Francis must be mad, crazy or insane. Why would a loving God require so much from one.of his beloved disciples. The more I see St. Francis, with all his passion, his madness for the love of Christ, the more I wonder If I could ever face any of the challneges that St. Francis faced. We who are so human, fall so short. St. Francis is such a great example, but one I can never be in the same ball park, nor do I want to be. Does that make me more human, or less Christian? I wonder if St. Francis in all his passion for Christ, failed to live, and enjoy life as a gift and blessing. One cannot walkway from this book, without doing some serious soul searching. Love to hear what others have to say, may be I am missing the point, who knows..Im as confused as ever!
This Bio is a classic, a must read for all Third Order Members. I love his work. Having discovered him when I was in High School with The last Temptation of Chrisr and The Greek Passion., I was thrilled to hear so many of my Third Order Brothers and Sisters boast on this book.
This is by far the most readable book (out of 20+ that I have read) on the life of Saint Francis. The author, Nikos Kazantzakis, is the man who gave us the wonderful tale of Zorba the Greek. The story is told from the viewpoint of St. Francis' friend, Leo.Dr.Wayne Dyer also recommends this book in [ASIN:0060192305 There's a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem]].
