I liked the beginning of the book more than the end. At first, I was intrigued by Frieda, the main character of the story, and enjoyed the setting and premise of a willful young woman participating as a rum runner during Prohibition. I thought the characters were well drawn. But as the story moved on, it became a bit muddled and unbelievable (also, there were modern day idioms and expressions, which were off-putting). Frieda's character underwent a complete make-over, and that did not seem plausible to me. Also, the story went on a bit too long and was a bit repetitive. I liked the relationship with Bea, Frieda's sister, and with her adopted father, but Charles (or "Princeton," as he was called) did not ring true to me. I thought the author did do a good job with descriptions of the town and the boats and the experiences on the sea. Not bad, but not great.

It is a special thrill as a reader when you are only a few chapters into a book and you know it will be one of your favorite reads of the year. The Whiskey Sea is one of those special books for me.The book begins with a mysterious image of a woman who is in the water and fears drowning. Then the story moves to 1908, when two young girls are orphaned after the sudden death of their mother. They are taken in by a kindly fisherman, and settle into life in a fishing community in New Jersey. The first few chapters are leisurely, but the pace picks up dramatically in 1923 when they are young women. The younger sister, Bea, dreams of going off to college and studying literature. The older sister, Frieda, wants to make a good living for her family in her hometown. While she is working as a ship mechanic, she becomes intrigued by the idea of rum running on boats, and takes on this dangerous and risky occupation. As a result she meets a wealthy and enigmatic young man from New York, and her life begins to change. This book is Frieda's story. The storytelling in this book is just so beautiful. I really cared about Frieda, Bea, and their adoptive father, Silver. The characters are so well developed and multi-dimensional. This would be a wonderful movie!I have to mention that Ann Howard Creel also wrote The Magic of Ordinary Days, which was the basis of my all time favorite Hallmark movie. I have it on DVD and have seen it many times. Anyone who loves the book or movie The Magic of Ordinary Days will absolutely adore this book. The descriptions in The Whiskey Sea are vivid and unique. For instance, when Frieda first sees a flotilla of boats running liquor: "A floating liquor establishment out in the middle of the dark ocean, like some kind of magical, mythical circus. It made Frieda think of pirates, mermaids, gods, and sirens of the sea. No one acted the slightest touched with doubt, even with jellyfish, like flowers, floating in the water about the boats and danger from the coast guard boats looming" (pp. 79 - 80).Fans of historical fiction will love The Whiskey Sea. I give it five stars and my highest recommendation.

I really enjoyed this believable story, set during the Prohibition era on the northeast coast of the US. This is why I enjoy historical fiction so much, learning about something I knew virtually nothing about and coming away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of events long past. The authors' writing style was engaging and character development was very well done. At times, I could almost taste and feel the salt from the air and ocean, feel the waves of the ocean swells, and see the stars twinkling in the darkened sky. I enjoyed following Frieda grow up from a young 4 year old girl to a determined, and mature, accomplished adult woman. Highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a good story, on a relatively little known topic, rum running. Very well researched, will read authors' other novels.

Ann Howard Creel's "The Whiskey Sea" has elements of what make a great story: a unique locale and storyline; captivating characters; a writer with proven skills. It should work. I really wanted it to work. There are brief moments of success, but in between the story just plods along. Creel takes too long too set up the climatic points which are too brief...and never surprising. Shorty after beginning the book, I anticipated all but one of the plot lines of the story, and that was more a distraction than an asset to the novel. What a shame to waste a great basic literary structure by not adequately developing the characters and the storyline!

I had never heard of the rum runners of the1920's so I was interested the subject as well as the location of them. The setting is in the NY/NJ area along the Atlantic coast. The story involves a young girl who becomes a boat engine expert. (In the 20's?) Her job is to keep the captian's boat running smoothly so he, as a whiskey smuggler, can out run the authorities. The community was very poor until some of the people started the rum runs. Then the community started building up and it became a great tourist destination. Of course, the story involves some relationships between the locals and tourists to make the story interesting. I enjoyed the book because it held my interest to the end.

I am surprised by the many 5 star reviews here. I did read the first page, before purchasing, which intrigued me. I was hoping to be immersed into the exciting historical period of prohibition. However, shortly after those opening pages, the writing immediately became too juvenile for my taste. In places, the grammar is even poor, which is bad editing in my opinion. The weak writing quickly distracted me from the predictable story. There were too many repetative sentences, and cliched phrases. At no time did I get the feel of the 1920’s prohibition era because the language was too “modern”. There is nothing gritty to this story. It simply became a dull romance novel, and I had to put it down about halfway through. I felt like this book was geared more toward a junior high school audience than a mature reader.
