I was assigned the 2006 edition of Managing Archives by Caroline Williams as a required text for an Introduction to Archives course in a master’s degree program in library and information science. It provides a good concise overview of archival practice, logically organized into chapters on appraisal, arrangement and description, access, preservation, and management. Williams’s prose is predominantly jargon-free, and she defines necessary terms and concepts clearly and succinctly, making it a very appropriate text for introducing new students to the discipline of archives. Like any introductory text, it has the inevitable fault of touching on a lot of topics without delving deeply into any of them, but for a one-volume overview of the field it’s quite successful. The text doesn’t get bogged down with a lot of theory and primarily concerns itself with practical knowledge, whether that be the performance of an archivist’s daily duties, the setting of policies, compliance with laws and regulations, or the management of an archive facility. Though there is some coverage of digital archives, they are not discussed specifically in great detail in the 2006 edition. Mostly Williams focuses on broader issues of records management and preservation that would apply to either paper or digital items. One caveat for American readers: Because Williams is a British author, when it comes to discussions of standards, policies, and legislation, she refers to those of the UK and sometimes Australia, rather than American law or the standards or guidelines published by NARA or the SAA. All of the examples, case studies, and sample documents illustrate compliance to the British codes, rules, and conventions. Though there is much common ground between archival practices throughout the Western world, these legal and regulatory distinctions are the one area where students might find themselves wishing for an American-published text. That’s not intended as a criticism of the author or the book, just a clarification of subject matter that should be taken into consideration before course adoption. Perhaps, for introductory courses, such distinctions are not important. For the most part, the principles of archival practice presented in the book are universally applicable to all nations, and Williams does a fine job of presenting them in a manner that’s accessible to novice students.
