Solaris Internals: Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris Kernel Architecture (paperback) (2nd Edition)

Review

"In total, the two books Solaris Performance and Tools & Solaris Internals reviewed here present a new level of knowledge about the internals of Solaris, what they do, how they behave, and how to analyze that behavior. The books are a must for developers, system programmers, and systems administrators who work with Solaris 8, 9, or 10. They are especially useful for users of Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris because of their exploration of the new tools in those releases. These books receive my highest recommendation. This book should be in the library of any serious Solaris administrator. It is not a book for beginners, but it is well-organized and well-explained. The authors went to a great deal of trouble to clean up the parts of the original edition that were not as easily understood, and their effort shows. The examples are clear and well-explained, and the information is indexed and cross-referenced in a way that makes it easy to follow threads across chapters. The authors of this book have been extraordinarily generous with their time and energy. Jim Mauro was very encouraging and helpful in explaining topics which found their way onto my web site and into my book. The entire community owes these gentlemen a debt of gratitude for their professionalism and their generosity.Scott CromarAuthor: Solaris Troubleshooting Handbook

This book has helped me immensely to understand what is happening 'behind the scenes' not only in Solaris-based systems, but also for systems such as FreeBSD.Over the past several years, I have become more and more curious about all the technology which has become available in FreeBSD which originates from Solaris: for example, ZFS, Boot Environments (the beadm command), DTrace, along with other subtler technologies which have close analogues in FreeBSD and Unix in general. To the last point, this book will help you understand how a true Unix-based system works if you will put some time into it. I enjoy skipping around to different sections, and comparing the Solaris implementation to my other trusty book "The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD..."Having also previously looked at the O'reilly book, "Understanding the Linux Kernel", I have to say the writing and organization in Solaris Internals is much more straightforward to understand. I think it a great advantage that the authors of this book thoroughly bring their working knowledge of Solaris to the rest of us.

Well written and detailed. If you wish or need to know about the internals of Solaris this book is the source. This is a second edition and covers 10 and updates information on 8 and 9. The first edition covered 2.5.1, 2.6, and 7. I liked the first edition and waited for this edition based on the books/authors web site and have not be disappointed. Highly recommended, a reasonable background in OS theory is helpful with the type of material covered here - but not required - it will aid in understanding however. Recommended more general OS books would include "Operating System Concepts" by A. Silberschutz, J. Peterson, P. Galvin, "Operating Sytstems" by A. Tanenbaum, A. Woodhull, and "Unix Internals" by Uresh Vahalia among others.

The book "Solaris (TM) Internals and OpenSolarisKernel Architecture (2nd Edition)"is one of the bestbooks (perhaps the best one) that I own onthe Operating Systems related field.I study also the Linux Kernel which is alsotechnically elegant, and I recommend to anyoneinterested in Operating Systems design andimplementation, to study theOpenSolaris Kernel also, since is very well designed andin my opinion is technicallythe best design that I know until now.The book is excellent, it has clear presentation of theadvanced algorithms used at the Solaris internally, and the reader has a lot to gain by elaboratingthe internals of perhaps the mostadvanced modern operating system.

thanks

Once again Solaris internal book giving us the insight tour for this major OS release. As far as systems support point of view this is one of the must read book set for every Systems Admin.Keep up the good work-

The book degrades slightly both in style and accuracy (typos here and there.) towards the end. I give it 4 stars for that reason and for lower quality of "contributed" chapters. Also, I miss the "Kernel bootstrap" chapter!
